Dr. Maxwell Silver's Flying Circus, Part II by Poetrymann Dr. Maxwell Silver's Flying Circus, Part II by Poetrymann
Mathilda Rathbottom had spent many years as the elephant trainer (and performer) in Dr. Maxwell Silver's Flying Circus. She was originally from a small village in Cornwall- the daughter of a mortician and his sickly wife who had finally succumbed to laudnum poisoning when Mathilda was only eight years old. The girl did her best to assist her father in the business, eagerly "modelling" coffins so grieving parents could get an iea of size and presentation. When Mathilda was 16, she discovered a new and surprising talent. She was able to communicate with animals, a gift that greatly disturbed her father and the villagers. It bothered them to be about their duties on their farms, only to discover Mathilda imploring their cows and pigs to flee before they became bangers and Shepards Pie. The last straw was when the Vicar discovered her in his stable, reading Marx's Manifesto to the horses and demanding they burn the vicarage. She ran away from home and after a few months, secured work as a hat check girl in a club in Brighton. It was there that she met Dr. Maxwell Silver, who was easily able to convince her to become his animal trainer and caretaker. Mathilda discovered she had a special affinity for elephants, and rose quickly as a star performer in the circus. Her favorite stunt was to ride them bareback and blindfolded, easily and gracefully leaping through flaming hoops.

Mathilda took her duties very seriously...a thing Tiny Tremore soon discovered to his peril. Tiny belied his name - all 400 pounds of him. He attended the show one night after imbibing too much ale and decided to play a prank after the show, involving the elephants and soap water.

Pieces of him were discovered in the river the next morning...and the tigers did not need feeding for three days.

The piece itself is amazing, but it's the prose backstory behind it that really makes it wonderful for me. Always enjoy your victoriana - this is just fabulous.

I love Edward Gorey!! No wonder it ticked all of my boxes :) Perhaps also with a few Gaiman-esque undertones, too?

Very interesting character story! :D I especially like how Mathilda reads Marx to the vicar's horses and about Tiny Tremore's affinity for ale :lmao: I hope you continue on this theme, it's turning out to be quite interesting!
